What is a motor protector?

Motor protectorA simple electromechanical device that protects a single motor from overload, input current fluctuations, or unexpected interruption of the main circuit. This includes line faults and phase loss or imbalance in a three-phase motor. A motor protection circuit breaker saves space and cost, provides fuse-free protection, and instantly shuts down the motor to prevent damage. It will also safely disconnect the current if a short circuit occurs. It will often be equipped with a thermal delay to allow the motor to cool down, and sometimes will automatically reconnect after cooling.

How do motor protectors work?

Motor protectors have three main functions and are designed to protect electric motors.

Thermal protection protects the motor from overload. If excessive current is detected, the expanding and contracting contacts disconnect the motor. A delayed response is built in to allow for the high inrush current that occurs when the motor is first started, but if this inrush is too long and the motor fails to start, the thermal contacts will trip.

Magnetic protection prevents dangerous electrical faults and short circuits by immediately disconnecting the current as soon as a fault is detected.

Phase protection protects against phase loss or imbalance. Three-phase circuit motors can only operate properly if the voltages in the three live conductors are balanced. Phase voltage imbalances of more than 2% reduce the efficiency and life of the motor, while a sudden loss of one of the phase voltages can cause even greater damage. In this case, the motor will continue to run, but the currents in the other two phases will exceed the rated value, most likely burning out the motor windings. The MPCB constantly measures changes in phase voltages and disconnects the motor immediately if a loss or imbalance occurs.

A manual interrupt mechanism is also included in the motor protector to allow the motor to be manually disconnected for standard maintenance or replacement.

There are two main reasons why overcurrent occurs; overload and short circuit. An overload can occur when an electrical device draws only slightly more current than the rated current, but this can build up over time. An overload will not cause damage the first time it occurs, but will only cause damage if it is not controlled. In contrast, a short circuit occurs very quickly and can draw current far in excess of the full rated load. Therefore, a short circuit must be dealt with immediately.

It can be confusing to differentiate between a motor circuit protector and a motor protection circuit breaker, since a motor protector is really just a special type of circuit breaker that only protects against short circuits. To protect against overloads when using a motor protector, an overload relay also needs to be installed. These are common in industrial motor control center assemblies where space is not such an issue and multiple assemblies are collected together. Motor protectors are also generally only used in branch circuits, while motor protectors are more commonly used in feeder circuits.
